Portugal’s investor residence framework

Portugal’s investment residence authorization—commonly called the Golden Visa or ARI—allows qualifying third-country nationals to seek temporary residence through eligible investment activity.

The program has changed over time. Direct residential real-estate acquisition is no longer the standard qualifying route, so investors should obtain current legal and investment advice before transferring funds.

Why the route remains attractive

According to Portugal’s immigration authority, ARI holders may reside and work in Portugal, travel within the Schengen Area, and request family reunification. The official framework also provides comparatively limited minimum-stay requirements.

  • A European residence base
  • Family reunification possibilities
  • Schengen travel subject to applicable rules
  • Possible progression to permanent residence or nationality under separate legal requirements

Investment selection requires independent diligence

Eligibility for immigration purposes does not mean an investment is financially suitable. Fund structure, fees, liquidity, term, manager experience, conflicts, tax consequences, and exit assumptions should be reviewed independently.

Immigration counsel confirms legal eligibility; regulated financial and tax professionals assess investment and tax consequences. Those roles should remain distinct.

Plan for the entire residence journey

Investors should budget for professional fees, government charges, renewals, biometrics, translations, family documents, travel, tax advice, and investment holding periods—not only the initial qualifying amount.
